Caliza is a small, family-owned and operated vineyard and winery located in the coveted Willow Creek district of Paso Robles, California. Our focus is on crafting wines from varietals common to the Rhône Valley of France - Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Viognier, among others. But like many winemakers in Paso Robles, we like to throw a surprise or two in the mix. Our wines reflect what we feel are an excellent example of what the region has to offer – bold, yet elegant wines that drink well today and well into the future.
Join us for a memorable tasting experience at 1525 Peachy Canyon Road.
2022 Azimuth - 93 points - "A blend of 44% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache, 19% Syrah, and 2% Mataro, the 2022 Azimuth offers notes of spiced redcurrants, darker cherries, leather, peppery herbs, and loamy earth. Medium to full-bodied, it has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe, present tannins, and a great nish. Aged 18 months in 60% new and 40% once-used French oak puncheons, it's rock solid, complex, and beautifully balanced. Drink 2025-2035."
2022 Companion - 94 points - "Based on 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Syrah, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Companion evokes darker currants, leather, cedar pencil, mint, and tobacco notes. Aged 18 months in 100% new French oak, it’s medium to full-bodied and nicely balanced, with good acidity and ne, ripe tannins. This beautifully balanced, serious wine offers lots of ripeness and will keep for a solid decade. Drink 2025-2037."
2022 Grenache - 94 points - "Based on 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah, the 2022 Grenache offers spiced redcurrants, sappy herbs, subtle pepper, and leather. Complex, nuanced, and spicy, it's round, supple, and seamless on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet present tannins, and outstanding length. Aged 18 months in 25% new and 75% neutral French oak puncheons, this complex Grenache will give many top Châteauneuf-du-Pape a run for their money. Drink 2025-2035."
2022 Sympatico - 93 points - "Based on 60% Tempranillo, 22% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Mataro, the 2022 Sympatico reveals spiced red and black berries, graphite, leather, and sunbaked soil notes, as well as cedar pencil. Medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, complex, and satisfying, it shows good ripeness and should have 10-12 years of prime drinking. It was aged 18 months in 54% new, 23% once-used, and 23% neutral French oak. Drink 2025- 2037."
2022 Syrah - 95 points - "Classic Paso Syrah notes of ripe blackberries, asphalt, graphite, and cured meats dene the aromatics of the 2022 Syrah. Rich and full-bodied, this monster of a Syrah has a concentrated, ripe mouthfeel, structured tannins, and a blockbuster nish. Made from 100% Syrah and aged 18 months in 100% new French oak, it reminds me slightly of a Hermitage from the Méal lieu-dit. Drink this upfront, sexy, opulent Syrah over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035."
2021 Cohort - 94 points - "Deep purple/plum-hued, the 2021 Cohort reveals ripe black fruits, freshly laid asphalt, ground pepper, and leather. A blend of 46% Petite Sirah, 20% Syrah, 19% Grenache, and 15% Mourvèdre, it's full-bodied, rich, and mouth-lling yet stays balanced and light on its feet. Aged 20 months in 60% new and 40% once-used French oak, this powerful red should drink nicely for a solid decade. Drink 2025-2035."
2022 Azimuth - 95 points - "This complex, engaging red displays a wild character, with chaparral, leather and white pepper details at the front complemented by a lilac note that unfolds on the palate alongside a fresh, elegantly textured core of black cherry and mulberry. Graphite weaves through, lending some structure, yet this finishes with poise and elegance around refined tannins and hints of cigar box and cordial. Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah and Mataro. Drink now through 2038. 360 cases made."
2022 Kän-krēt Grenache - 96 points - "Precise aromas of strawberry, rhubarb and hibiscus meet with an earthy beetroot element on the dynamic nose of this bottling, which was aged for 11 months in concrete before finishing seven months in neutral oak. Dark cherry flavors are lifted by elegant lines of violet and rosewater on the palate."
2021 Reserve Syrah - 97 points - "Very dark in the glass, this incredibly intense style of Syrah erupts on the nose with cocoa, espresso bean, charred bacon fat, squid ink and grilled boysenberry aromas on the nose. There's an iodine streak to the tarry palate, where Sichuan peppercorn, oyster sauce and elderberry jam flavors make for savory harmony."
2022 End of the Day Red Cuvée - 93 points - "This series of wines packs in tons of bang for the buck. Elegant aromas of violet, lilac, boysenberry and black cherry draw in the nose. The palate is lush with creamy blackberry and more purple flower flavors that benefit from a dose of star anise."

Caliza is Spanish for "limestone", which is an important component of Caliza's vineyard. The 28-acre vineyard is predominantly comprised of hillsides with south-facing slopes and steep terraced blocks. This orientation is preferable due to the maximum sun exposure for the vines. The lower vineyard blocks are at 900 feet above sea level and range to over 1,200 feet at the highest blocks. Located within the Willow Creek District AVA the vineyard faces significant swings in day and night temperatures with as much as 50°F in variation. This allows the fruit to hold onto its acidity and achieve prime phenolic maturity during the long, warm growing season.
MORE...Carl Bowker, owner and winemaker, has followed a long yet steady path towards his goal of producing special wines. Born and raised in Hawaii, Carl began his farming experience while tagging along with his father, an irrigation specialist to the local farms. This early introduction left a lasting impression and true appreciation for soils and the farming life. Little did he realize that this childhood curiosity would lead him to the special soils of Paso Robles, California.
