2021 AZIMUTH
53% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache, 12% Syrah

2021 AZIMUTH

Wine reviewer, Jeb Dunnuck Says..."The 2021 Azimuth is a Mourvèdre-dominated blend that includes 35% Grenache and 12% Syrah. Aged 20 months in 30% new oak, its ruby/plum hue is followed by terrific aromatics of gamey red and black fruits, ground pepper, iron, and tapenade nuances. It's a big, lush, layered red that brings terrific Paso Robles fruit while staying beautifully balanced, layered, and elegant on the palate. Drink this awesome red over the coming decade." 95

Wine critic Owen Bargreen says, "The 2021 ‘Azimuth’ combines 53% Mourvèdre with
35% Grenache and the remainder Syrah. Stored for 20 months in mostly used oak
barrels, this offers beautiful aromatic range with smoked meats, black olive tapenade,
salted black fruits and shades of tar. The palate is soft and refined with a silky texture.
Big and bold with beautiful freshness and salty character, this is a totally stunning new
wine by winemaker Carl Bowker. 400 cases made. Drink 2024-2040" - 96

Wine critic Erin Brooks says, "The 2021 Azimuth is a blend of 53% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache and 12% Syrah matured for 20 months in 30% new French oak. It takes some air to open from tar and earth to reveal blackberries, blueberries, lavender, tea leaves and conifer-like undertones. The medium-bodied palate features restrained, perfumed fruit supported by chalky tannins and refreshing acidity, and it has a long, nuanced finish. 400 cases were produced, and it will be released in the spring of 2024." - 94

Wine critic Lisa Perrotti-Brown says, "The 2021 Azimuth is a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little shaking to wake up notes of black raspberries, black cherry preserves, and wild blueberries plus hints of Chinese five spice, dusty soil, and garrigue. The full-bodied palate is wonderfully savory/earthy, with a lightly chewy texture and bags of freshness, finishing on a lingering peppery note." - 93

Wine critic Eric Guido of Vinous says, "Crushed cherries, sweet herbs and hints of incense create an inviting bouquet as the 2021 Azimuth slowly evolves in the glass. It soothes with its round and supple textures as a savory core of spiced red berries slowly saturates. Rosy inner florals arch across the palate as this leaves a minty freshness and gritty tannins, forming a crunchy sensation toward the close. The Azimuth is a blend of 53% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache and 12% Syrah refined in 30% new French oak." - 91

The 2021 Azimuth finds harmony with the three varieties in the blend while allowing attributes from each to shine through. Light gaminess, pencil shavings, and dried herbs give way to very focused and delicate red fruit, while a whisp of smoked cedar dances across the glass. Starting with more juicy red fruit upon entry, the palate is medium-bodied with round, age-worthy, and persistent tannin. Plum and fig preserves, along with grilled meats and cherry cola fill out the concentrated, lengthy finish.
